UV4Plants at the Light & Life, 2019 ESP-IUPB World Congress, Barcelona

During the last joint ESP-IUPB World Congress (17th International Congress on Photobiology and 18th Congress of the European Society for Photobiology), held in Barcelona on August 25-30th 2019, UV4Plants members presented several talks and posters dedicated to the role of UV in plants. Novel findings and perspectives of UV-research were covered by a key note lecture by Dongping Zhong and on several sessions devoted to plant, photosensory and environmental photobiology: “UV Radiation and Rapid Climate Change: Implications for Plants and Ecosystem”, “Blue Light and UV Receptors. In Memoriam Winslow Briggs”, “Effect of UV Light on Plants”, “Reactive Oxygen Species in Photosynthetic Organisms: Sensing and Defense”, “Photoreceptors and Plant Development”. Additionally, on Wednesday 28 August, a social event for UV4Plants members was held in the Ayre Hotel Gran Via to strengthen the collaboration in a nice and friendly atmosphere.

Plant Responses to UV: Themed Collection of articles published

Plant Responses to UV Themed Collection of articles published by Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences A collection of articles on Plant Responses to UV contributed by UV4Plants members and edited by Gareth Jenkins has now been published. It can be accessed at the journal’s web site. The collection is based substantially on presentations given at the 2018 Network Meeting of UV4Plants in Bled and includes the wide-ranging perspective article coordinated by Matthew Robson that was based on workshop discussions at the meeting. The collection highlights the breadth of research being undertaken by UV4Plants members to understand how plants respond to UV radiation in the environment. Some articles focus on the mechanisms of UV perception and the consequent regulation of gene expression and downstream responses, while others are concerned with ecological perspectives and applications in crop production. Some additional articles that have not yet completed the review and revision process can still be added to the collection when they are accepted.

Article: Perspectives on plant UV-research and its applications

An article, titled “A perspective on ecologically relevant plant-UV research and its practical application”, to be included in the PPS special issue, has been published on-line. It originated on discussions at the second UV4Plants Network meeting held in Bled last year, but writing and editing continued for several months. The article has been published under open access and is available through PPS’ web site. The graphical and text abstracts are reproduced below.
